Historically Speaking ---------

In 1967, Jerome McAfee received his calling into the ministry while an active member of New Liberty Baptist Church. He was ordained on October 8, 1969 by the late Pastor E. Allen Rundless. A four-step vision was given by God to Pastor McAfee in his home on Santa Barbara. The Lord told him that he would have a million-dollar church in ten years and he would never have to sell dinners or beg. This would happen in four steps. He met with fifteen people at his home on Santa Barbara, and held church services. Some of the founding members were Reverend Jerome McAfee, wife-Jacqulin R. McAfee, Tyrone Green, Clifford and Barbara McAfee, King LeFlore Sr., and Leroy McWhite. The first family Reverend McAfee went to talk to about membership in the church was the LeFlore family. The family joined Rock of Ages and for many years remained faithful members. Six weeks later, he moved the services to a storefront church on Gratiot Avenue (first step) where he organized and officially founded the Rock of Ages Missionary Baptist Church in July 1971. Five years later, the church moved to Van Dyke Avenue which was the second step of the vision. Ten years later, the church relocated to Schaefer Highway which was the third step. Fulfilling the fourth step of the vision, the congregation motorcaded into their new place of worship on Evergreen Road in June 1998! Glory be to God! But- this step was not complete. No longer would the church carry the description “Missionary Baptist Church.” We acknowledge that Jesus Christ is the only true Savior. We acknowledge all men, women, and children should be ministered unto. We will continue to teach the Baptist doctrine under our new church name, “Rock of Ages Christian Ministries.” Founding members who have since made their transition from mortality to immortality were Bro. and Sis. LeFlore, Leroy McWhite, Jacqulin R. McAfee, Barbara McAfee and Trustee Clifford McAfee. Still with us today is Deacon Tyrone Green. Pastor Jerome McAfee retired from pastoring and on February 12, 2012, his son, Jerome Ricardo McAfee, was installed as Pastor of Rock of Ages Christian Ministries after functioning as assistant pastor. Pastor Jerome Ricardo McAfee continued to lead as a gifted pastor for six years until his declining health forced him to step down in 2018. Pastor Emeritus McAfee came out of retirement to temporarily lead the congregation until after careful searching, De’Shante Darrell Ervin Sr. was voted as the new pastor of Rock of Ages Christian Ministries on Sunday, March 27, 2022. Pastor Ervin continues to lead with great compassion and strength in the word of God. To God be the Glory!

What We Believe

"My experience at the Rock!" It all started when I was having some growing challenges with my son. I was not yet a member of the church, but my son had an existing relationship with Pastor Ervin so we decided to reach out. Pastor Ervin went above and beyond for my family. This set the tone for what was to come. After continuing to visit the church for service, God told me I was in the right place. The members of the Rock are God focused, and beyond caring. The people lead with humility and Love. Joining was one of the best decisions I've ever made. It is important to remember we are ALL HUMAN and we make mistakes, BUT GODS GRACE paid it all!!! He makes no mistakes!!! As his children, our job is to lift his name in praise, love one another as he has loved us, and hold fast to his unchanging hand! AMEN!

To my pastor De'Shante D. Ervin Sr. and his wife the first lady Crystal Ervin, I would like to say that you have no idea how every sermon has made an impact on my life, how they have change my mindset, helped me become a better person, and how I apply those sermons to my life. Please believe that I'm always listening and watching, whether I'm in the pews or live streaming from home. Sometimes the sermons be so good, I have to watch it again, like an episode of one of my favorite television shows. I would say that joining Rock of Ages has become the highlight of my life in 2022. I'm so blessed to be apart of a wonderful church family. Thank you.

I've been a member since 1991. Even though I've divorced during that time, my ex-husband & I agree that the Rock was positively instrumental in the spiritual growth of our children. There's ALWAYS been sound doctrine, teaching and love!

"To God be the Glory" I have been a baptized member of Rock of Ages Christian Ministries since June of 1981 under the leadership of then Pastor and Founder, Jerome McAfee. During my membership I learned from the Christian examples and teaching of Pastor Jerome McAfee and wife Sister Jacqulin R. McAfee. Under their leadership I learned the meaning of doing your best for the Lord and doing things in decency and in order as the Lord would have us to do. During my many years at ROACM I learned the gospel and the importance of study and prayer. In later years I remained at ROACM under the leadership of their son, Jerome Ricardo McAfee. I continue to learn and study under our new leader Pastor DeShante' Ervin Sr.

I started attending Rock of Ages in 2016. I was a member of another church for over 50 years. But my daughter and I stopped going because of church hurt by some of the church officers. The Rock’s choir director at the time was someone I had known for years and had sung with before. He told me he was at the Rock and wanted to know if we wanted to come and sing. I told him yes and the rest is history. The church opened their arms wide to us and treated us right away like family. I could feel the love and warmth coming for everyone each time I walked in the building. But I kept wondering when I was going to make it official and join the church. I prayed and asked God to give me a sign and let me know. I even asked my daughter her thoughts. She said she also loved the church and didn’t want to leave. She told me it was up to me and that she would follow my lead. Well in 2021 during alter call after a dynamic sermon God said, “it’s time Natalie!” So, I stood up and started heading for the isle. My daughter was sitting behind me, and I heard her say “well I guess it’s time” and followed me to the alter. That was one of the best days of my life! I love my church and look forward to being there each week. The spirit of the Lord is truly there and I’m so glad that my daughter and I can call Rock of Ages home!

I started attending Rock of Ages in 2016. I was a member of another church for over 50 years. But my daughter and I stopped going because of church hurt by some of the church officers. The Rock’s choir director at the time was someone I had known for years and had sung with before. He told me he was at the Rock and wanted to know if we wanted to come and sing. I told him yes and the rest is history. The church opened their arms wide to us and treated us right away like family. I could feel the love and warmth coming for everyone each time I walked in the building. But I kept wondering when I was going to make it official and join the church. I prayed and asked God to give me a sign and let me know. I even asked my daughter her thoughts. She said she also loved the church and didn’t want to leave. She told me it was up to me and that she would follow my lead. Well in 2021 during alter call after a dynamic sermon God said, “it’s time Natalie!” So, I stood up and started heading for the isle. My daughter was sitting behind me, and I heard her say “well I guess it’s time” and followed me to the alter. That was one of the best days of my life! I love my church and look forward to being there each week. The spirit of the Lord is truly there and I’m so glad that my daughter and I can call Rock of Ages home!

The Lord told him that he would have a million-dollar church in ten years and he would never have to sell dinners or beg. This would happen in four steps. He met with fifteen people at his home on Santa Barbara, and held church services. Some of the founding members were Reverend Jerome McAfee, wife-Jacqulin R. McAfee, Tyrone Green, Clifford and Barbara McAfee, King LeFlore Sr., and Leroy McWhite. The first family Reverend McAfee went to talk to about membership in the church was the LeFlore family. The family joined Rock of Ages and for many years remained faithful members. Six weeks later, he moved the services to a storefront church on Gratiot Avenue (first step) where he organized and officially founded the Rock of Ages Missionary Baptist Church in July 1971. Five years later, the church moved to Van Dyke Avenue which was the second step of the vision. Ten years later, the church relocated to Schaefer Highway which was the third step. Fulfilling the fourth step of the vision, the congregation motorcaded into their new place of worship on Evergreen Road in June 1998! Glory be to God! But- this step was not complete. No longer would the church carry the description “Missionary Baptist Church.” We acknowledge that Jesus Christ is the only true Savior. We acknowledge all men, women, and children should be ministered unto. We will continue to teach the Baptist doctrine under our new church name, “Rock of Ages Christian Ministries.” Founding members who have since made their transition from mortality to immortality were Bro. and Sis. LeFlore, Leroy McWhite, Jacqulin R. McAfee, Barbara McAfee and Trustee Clifford McAfee. Still with us today is Deacon Tyrone Green. Pastor Jerome McAfee retired from pastoring and on February 12, 2012, his son, Jerome Ricardo McAfee, was installed as Pastor of Rock of Ages Christian Ministries after functioning as assistant pastor. Pastor Jerome Ricardo McAfee continued to lead as a gifted pastor for six years until his declining health forced him to step down in 2018. Pastor Emeritus McAfee came out of retirement to temporarily lead the congregation until after careful searching, De’Shante Darrell Ervin Sr. was voted as the new pastor of Rock of Ages Christian Ministries on Sunday, March 27, 2022. Pastor Ervin continues to lead with great compassion and strength in the word of God. To God be the Glory!

"My experience at the Rock!" It all started when I was having some growing challenges with my son. I was not yet a member of the church, but my son had an existing relationship with Pastor Ervin so we decided to reach out. Pastor Ervin went above and beyond for my family. This set the tone for what was to come. After continuing to visit the church for service, God told me I was in the right place. The members of the Rock are God focused, and beyond caring. The people lead with humility and Love. Joining was one of the best decisions I've ever made. It is important to remember we are ALL HUMAN and we make mistakes, BUT GODS GRACE paid it all!!! He makes no mistakes!!! As his children, our job is to lift his name in praise, love one another as he has loved us, and hold fast to his unchanging hand! AMEN!

To my pastor De'Shante D. Ervin Sr. and his wife the first lady Crystal Ervin, I would like to say that you have no idea how every sermon has made an impact on my life, how they have change my mindset, helped me become a better person, and how I apply those sermons to my life. Please believe that I'm always listening and watching, whether I'm in the pews or live streaming from home. Sometimes the sermons be so good, I have to watch it again, like an episode of one of my favorite television shows. I would say that joining Rock of Ages has become the highlight of my life in 2022. I'm so blessed to be apart of a wonderful church family. Thank you.

I've been a member since 1991. Even though I've divorced during that time, my ex-husband & I agree that the Rock was positively instrumental in the spiritual growth of our children. There's ALWAYS been sound doctrine, teaching and love!

"To God be the Glory" I have been a baptized member of Rock of Ages Christian Ministries since June of 1981 under the leadership of then Pastor and Founder, Jerome McAfee. During my membership I learned from the Christian examples and teaching of Pastor Jerome McAfee and wife Sister Jacqulin R. McAfee. Under their leadership I learned the meaning of doing your best for the Lord and doing things in decency and in order as the Lord would have us to do. During my many years at ROACM I learned the gospel and the importance of study and prayer. In later years I remained at ROACM under the leadership of their son, Jerome Ricardo McAfee. I continue to learn and study under our new leader Pastor DeShante' Ervin Sr.

I started attending Rock of Ages in 2016. I was a member of another church for over 50 years. But my daughter and I stopped going because of church hurt by some of the church officers. The Rock’s choir director at the time was someone I had known for years and had sung with before. He told me he was at the Rock and wanted to know if we wanted to come and sing. I told him yes and the rest is history. The church opened their arms wide to us and treated us right away like family. I could feel the love and warmth coming for everyone each time I walked in the building. But I kept wondering when I was going to make it official and join the church. I prayed and asked God to give me a sign and let me know. I even asked my daughter her thoughts. She said she also loved the church and didn’t want to leave. She told me it was up to me and that she would follow my lead. Well in 2021 during alter call after a dynamic sermon God said, “it’s time Natalie!” So, I stood up and started heading for the isle. My daughter was sitting behind me, and I heard her say “well I guess it’s time” and followed me to the alter. That was one of the best days of my life! I love my church and look forward to being there each week. The spirit of the Lord is truly there and I’m so glad that my daughter and I can call Rock of Ages home!
